Author Biography

John “Jack” Gordon - Since his discharge from the Army Air Corps in 1945, Jack Gordon has lived on and worked the historic David Williams farm in the highlands of the Northwest Catskills. (Williams was one of the captors of Major Andre, the British officer who was to receive Benedict Arnold’s betrayal of West Point.) As a local resident Jack has talked, reminisced, and worked with the people portrayed, most of which have passed on. A lifetime of interest in town and country history combined with a curiosity to understand has resulted in this tale of life in the "good old days."

Ralph Hull - Ralph Hull was the 13th child of 14 children born to John and Henrietta Hull. He is a descendant of one of the original seven settlers to the village of Durham, NY in Greene County. Ralph is now 96 years old and over the years he wrote notes about his life memories and his daughter Janet taped him. Janet then transcribed the tapes, inserted pictures and published Ralph’s book “A Lifetime of Experiences and Memories”.

The Rensselaerville Historical Society - The Historical Society and the Library are the two cultural organizations that serve the entire Town of Rensselaerville. For over fifty years, the Society has collected, cataloged, preserved, and published materials and records necessary to understand the history of our Town.  In addition to an extensive archives and genealogy files, the Society maintains and offers tours of the Grist Mill, the last representative of dozens of water-powered enterprises and businesses that once flourished along the Ten Mile Creek. We welcome friends and neighbors to join our membership.

Reinhold Scholz - Reinhold was born and raised in Northern Germany during World War II. To escape the poverty of his family and the ravages of the war, he left Germany and worked on many Merchant Marine ships. Eventually, he came to America and attended Albany High School, where he met his future wife, Heidi. Reinhold owned and ran the Zwicklbauer German Restaurant on Warner’s Lake, where the best sauerbraten was served. He was always ready to engage customers in conversation. Although now retired, Reinhold can still be frequently found at his prior restaurant, chatting with his many friends in English or in German.
